Diplomatic Communiqué: Enhancement of Bilateral Relations Between the Republic of Burundi and the Commonwealth of Australia

On the occasion of an official audience at Government House in Canberra, Her Excellency the Honourable Sam Mostyn AC, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, received His Excellency Télesphore Irambona, who formally presented his Letters of Credence as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Burundi. This ceremony signifies the formal commencement of Ambassador Irambona’s diplomatic tenure and underscores the institutional continuity of bilateral relations between the two nations.

During the audience, the Governor-General reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to the enduring partnership with Burundi. Discussions centered on the promotion of regional stability, with a specific focus on Australia’s support for multilateral dialogue and the encouragement of peaceful resolution frameworks within the Great Lakes region. Both parties reaffirmed shared objectives regarding socioeconomic advancement and humanitarian cooperation through sustainable development initiatives.

A significant portion of the dialogue was dedicated to the Burundian-Australian community. The Governor-General acknowledged the Burundian community’s successful integration into Australia’s multicultural fabric, noting their substantive contributions to the national economy and social cohesion. In response, Ambassador Irambona articulated a strategic vision for his mission, prioritising economic diversification by strengthening trade links and investment opportunities. Furthermore, he emphasised the importance of fostering academic partnerships and knowledge transfer, alongside the strategic mobilisation of the Burundian diaspora to assist in national development initiatives.

Adelaide

Following the official proceedings in the capital, the Ambassador travelled to Adelaide for a consultative session with leaders of the Burundian community of South Australia. Mr Remy Niyirera, the current President of the Burundian Diaspora in Australia, characterised the visit as a “pivotal advancement” in the diplomatic history of the two states. This mission serves as a foundation for a renewed era of bilateral engagement, predicated on mutual respect and shared prosperity.
