Our history

The Foundation

From its inception, the organisation was founded by Mr. Jean Pierre Niyibaruta to serve the community and foster social justice. Our journey began in Brisbane, Queensland, where registration officially commenced on December 18, 2015, marking the start of our formal commitment to community service in Australia.

A Journey of Growth and Identity

As our mission expanded, our name evolved to reflect our deepening focus and the community we serve. The company has operated under the following legal names:

  • Further Hope Community Support Ltd. – Our original founding name upon registration on December 18, 2015.
  • Burundian Diaspora in Australia (BDA) Ltd – Adopted on October 23, 2020, to better represent our primary community focus.
  • Australian Charity for Burundi (ACB) Ltd – Our current name, adopted on October 16, 2024, signifying our dedicated humanitarian focus on supporting rural communities in Burundi.

Charity Recognition

Beyond our corporate registration, our commitment to transparency and impact led us to seek formal charitable status. On April 30, 2016, we were officially registered by the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC).

Today, as a public company limited by guarantee, Australian Charity for Burundi (ACB) Ltd continues to build on the foundation laid by Mr. Niyibaruta, working to create lasting change and bridge the gap between Australia and Burundi
