The establishment of the Institut Burundais pour la Formation Professionnelle (IBFP) is currently underway. This new institution is strategically designed to function as a crucial accelerator for Burundi’s long-term development goals, directly supporting the national transition toward an Emerging Country by 2040 and a Developed Country by 2060.
Unlike traditional academic institutions that focus on long-cycle degrees for school leavers, the IBFP is being built with a distinct mandate: to provide immediate, high-impact upskilling for the existing employed workforce, business owners, and entrepreneurs.
Strategic Alignment and Core Mission
The IBFP’s mission is anchored in the Burundi Vision 2040-2060, specifically aiming to establish a “diversified, high-performing, and modern services sector”. By focusing on continuous professional development, the institute aims to bridge the critical skills gap and modernise operations within the current economy.
Key Areas of Focus
To drive this economic transformation, the IBFP is developing a curriculum centred on three critical pillars identified as essential for a modern economy:
- Business and Management: Professionalising governance, financial acumen, and operational efficiency for enterprises.
- Information and Communication Technology (ICT): Addressing the digital skills gap by enabling digital transformation and e-commerce capacity for local businesses.
- Service Excellence (Hospitality, Retail, & Customer Care): Formalising service standards to enhance customer experience and professionalism in the services sector.
A Modern Approach to Learning
The IBFP model differentiates itself through a modular, competency-based framework. Recognising the time constraints of working adults, the training programs are designed to be:
- Applied and Practical: Focusing on measurable skills rather than broad academic theory.
- Flexible: Utilising a blended learning model that combines digital components with intensive in-person practical sessions.
- Market-Responsive: Curriculum aligned with the National Qualification and Certification Framework (CNQC) and driven by rigorous Training Needs Analysis (TNA) to ensure relevance to the private sector.
